Fantasy Basketball Power Rankings: LeBron James Stays on Top, Blake Griffin Rounds Out Top 10

LeBron can't be stopped.

Another week finds the King firmly seated on his fantasy throne. It’s good to be the King (or at least own him). With two potential top ten fantasy basketball performers in Carmelo Anthony and Deron Williams going to new teams this week, it will be interesting to see how they fit in their new homes. For that reason both miss the top 10 fantasy power rankings this week.

1. LeBron James, Small Forward, Miami Heat, Trending Steady

If he is not injured, chances are he is going to be number one.  So far it appears he is 100% healthy, which means he remains in the top spot. Opponents don’t matter with LeBron, so we won’t even go over that. All you need to know is he has three games on his schedule and he’s the best chance to give you a victory in your fantasy basketball lineup.

2.            LaMarcus Aldridge, Power Forward, Portland Trailblazers, Trending Steady

My pick for Most Improved Fantasy Performer, Aldridge stays steady this week at number two on the power rankings list. There is no way the Rockets, Kings and Bobcats will slow him down in week 19. We are talking about a man who is playing almost as good as the King himself. Let the numbers do the talking – 20, 42, 37,36,34,29 are his point totals in his last six games. In his last three games he is averaging 4.0 assists and 2.3 steals. Aldridge edges out D-Rose for the number two spot this week.

3.            Derrick Rose, Point Guard, Chicago Bulls, Trending Up

Some may be asking why LBJ is number one almost every week and not someone like Rose. Well let’s look at their head to head matchup in week 18 to answer that question.  Rose (the leading MVP candidate in my opinion) had 26 points, five rebounds and six assists. The King had 29 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Rose may mean more to his team than LeBron in the NBA, but the King certainly means more to your fantasy team than Rose. Rose isn’t in the second spot this week due to stiff competition from the Magic, Heat and Hornets in week 19. With Aldridge having a little easier schedule, it’s a toss-up with Rose dropping behind ever so slightly. There are no ties on the power rankings list!

4.            Russell Westbrook, Point Guard, Oklahoma City Thunder, Trending Up

A slump to someone like Westbrook, one of the best fantasy players in the game are numbers like 16.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game over his last three games. Playing four games in week 19 with teams such as the Pacers, Hawks, Suns and Grizzlies will be the perfect medicine for those “low for him” numbers.  I would expect numbers closer to his 22.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 8.5 assists seasons average this week.

5.            Kevin Durant, Small Forward, Oklahoma City Thunder, Trending Up

The scoring champion will keep on scoring in his four games in week 19. The numbers we have come to expect from him almost every night will be there again, 28 points, eight rebounds and two or three assists per game sounds just about right. Pacers and Hawks may challenge him a little, but his last game against the Grizzlies had Durant go for 31 points and 10 rebounds, his last game against the Suns saw him go for 24 points, 11 rebounds, three block shots, one steal and one assist. KD is up a spot this week.

6.            Dwight Howard, Center, Orlando Magic, Trending Down

The Beast in the middle goes up against the new look Knicks in week 19, which should be a good one. Then he has the Heat and the Bulls, not a very easy week for Superman. With that kind of kryptonite, you have to expect a little bit of a drop in points from him this week.

7.            Dwayne Wade, Shooting Guard, Miami Heat, Trending Down

Mr. Consistent drops this week, but when you look at his week 19 schedule you will realize why. The Magic, Spurs and Bulls are the Heat’s three opponents next week, all are great defensively. I am sure we will see the end of Wade’s four game 20 or more points streak in at least one, maybe even two of these games. His numbers should be a slight lower than the 24/6/4 we have become so used to.

8.            Chris Paul, Point Guard, New Orleans Hornets, Trending Up

I am predicting a great second half for Paul; let’s see if it will start in week 19. His first game after the all-star break saw him go for 19 points, six rebounds and ten assists, that’s the numbers we want from Paul. In week 19 his matchups are the Raptors, Knicks, Grizzlies and Cavs.  This sure looks like the perfect schedule to put up monster numbers, the Cavilers and Knicks rank two and three among opposing team scoring, both allowing over 105 points per game. In fact of the four teams Paul faces in week 19, only the Grizzlies allow opponents less than 100 points per game (98.3). This week could be the start of something good for Paul owners.

9.            Kobe Bryant, Shooting Guard, Los Angeles Lakers, Trending Up

28.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.5 assists, vintage Kobe numbers in his last two games. He destroyed Portland single handily in his last game, I think it’s going to be one of those weeks for him. Problem for Kobe owners will be how long he will stay in the games? The Timberwolves and Bobcats are no match for the Mamba and more than likely he will miss a lot of time in the fourth quarter due to a blowout score. For that reason he comes in at a low number nine. The Lakers may just be too good for Bryant owners.

10.            Blake Griffin, Power Forward, Los Angeles Clippers, Trending Down

His Robin is gone (Baron Davis), which means less alley-oop dunks by probably one a game? Davis loved playing with Griffin and I must tell you it will have an effect on ROY’s numbers that is until Mo Williams comes back from injury. Once that occurs I think the rookie of the year will be even better off.  In his first game without Davis in the lineup in sometime, you could clearly see Griffin missed Davis. But ROY is one of the best in the game; he still ended the night with solid numbers – 21 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists. Griffin can make his own shot, so don’t get too worried about the departure of Davis, but once Williams returns, we may see a better Robin for Batman.
